More common than you may think, gastric ulcers in horses are caused by factors such as health history, diet and stress. If ulcers are diagnosed, reach for GASTROGARD paste, a proven safe and effective equine gastric ulcer treatment approved by the FDA with a long history of success.

 

GASTROGARD paste has been shown to heal or significantly improve ulcers in up to 99% of treated horses.1 The active ingredient, omeprazole, works to suppress the secretion of gastric acid, giving the ulcer time to heal.

 

The safety of GASTROGARD paste has not been determined in pregnant or lactating mares. GASTROGARD paste is for use in horses and foals 4 weeks of age and older. Caution: Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Dosage & Administration

Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

 

GASTROGARD paste for horses is recommended for use in horses and foals 4 weeks of age and older. The contents of one syringe will dose a 1250-lb (568 kg) horse at the rate of 1.8 mg omeprazole/lb of body weight (4 mg/kg). For treatment of gastric ulcers, each weight-marking on the syringe plunger will deliver sufficient omeprazole to treat 250 lbs (114 kg) of body weight.

 

For prevention of recurrence of gastric ulcers, each weight-marking will deliver sufficient omeprazole to dose 500 lbs (227 kg) of body weight at the rate of 0.9 mg omeprazole/lb of body weight (2 mg/kg).

- Protect the omeprazole as it makes its way to the small intestine for adequate absorption.

- Ensure the potency and stability of the product.

 

In a 60-day study, compounded formulations of omeprazole started as low as 63% of labeled concentration and dropped as low as 17% on day 60. GASTROGARD paste concentrations remained stable throughout.2
